A tribute to one of my favourite TV shows and subsequent movie, who's cancellation after one season has left a hole in my heart that can only be filled by space cowboys. A HUGE thank-you to Mishka from Accio Lacquer for helping me make sense of the wibbly-wobbly way of getting gifs into posts! If you've got any fangirl in you, you need to read her blog. If not, she has absolutely perfect nails and gorgeous photos too! :D
And now, to reiterate what Mishka said about the cancellation of Firefly... "Curse you sudden but inevitable betrayal, FOX!" Picture and gif-heavy, so the rest is after the jump...
Crash course time!! I won't judge if you skip this to look at the pretties... Capt'n Reynolds is another matter.
Technically classified as a 'space western drama', the show takes place in the year 2517; the only two surviving superpowers (the US and China) have joined to form a central government, the Alliance, after a large population from Earth had emigrated to a new star system in generation ships. The show centers around the crew of Serenity, the Firefly-class spaceship, who fought on the losing side of a civil war, along with others they've picked up who now make a living as part of the pioneer culture on the fringes of their star system. So, basically... Space cowboys.
The main character, Captain Mal Reynolds, is played brilliantly by the one and only Nathan Fillion, who now makes a weekly appearance on my blog (during the TV season) in the form of Castle Mani Monday posts, as Rick Castle.
Yep, Castle dressed up as Mal Reynolds for Halloween. In the words of the man himself: "Way too meta." Ok, enough talking. Shall we move on to the nails?
Well, if River says so. Watch out, she can kill you with her brain.
For this mani I decided to do a subtle rusty-looking galaxy backdrop, and paint 'Firefly' across it in big shiny letters. I considered adding a matte top coat too, but in the words of Kaylee, "Everything's shiny, Capt'n!"
I started with one coat of OPI Every Month Is Oktoberfest, and then sponged on a whole pile of polishes in varying shades of red and brown. I wanted a more subtle look than the usual painted-on stars, so I added a thin coat of Orly Prisma Gloss Gold to give the look of lots of tiny sparkling stars. The lettering was done with acrylic paint.
As for my thumb, I decided to attempt to paint Serenity's logo. In doing so, I committed myself to trying to paint super tiny Chinese lettering on my nail. Why do I make myself do this?
I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, but if any of you can read Chinese, please don't judge. :P
So, you knew this question was coming... Any other Browncoats out there? If so, leave a comment; I'd love to know who my fellow fangirls are! :D
Now don't forget to take a look at everyone else's manicures for Polish Days, too!
